Frequently Asked Questions

Carbamide Peroxide vs. Hydrogen Peroxide: What's the difference?

Both are effective whitening agents, but they work slightly differently.

Hydrogen Peroxide (HP) is a powerful, fast-acting agent that breaks down quickly. It provides immediate results but has a higher chance of causing temporary sensitivity.

Carbamide Peroxide (CP) is a more stable compound that breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and urea over several hours. This slower, more sustained release is gentler on the teeth and is often preferred for at-home kits as it reduces the risk of sensitivity while still delivering excellent results. For example, a 35% carbamide peroxide gel is roughly equivalent to a 12% hydrogen peroxide gel.

What do the different percentages of whitening gel mean?

The percentage refers to the concentration of the active whitening ingredient (e.g., carbamide peroxide). A higher percentage means a stronger, faster-acting formula. However, this also means it should be worn for a shorter period.

  • 16%-22% Carbamide Peroxide: A great starting point. Typically worn for 45-60 minutes per session. Balances effectiveness with low sensitivity risk.
  • 35% Carbamide Peroxide: A stronger, professional-level formula. Treatment times are shorter, usually around 20-30 minutes.
It's important to always follow the specific instructions included with your kit.

How long and how often should I use my whitening kit?

For a full whitening treatment, we recommend using the kit once a day for 7-14 consecutive days. The duration of each session depends on the gel strength you are using—typically between 20 to 60 minutes. After your initial treatment, you can perform touch-ups as needed, usually once every 1-3 months, to maintain your bright smile.

I'm experiencing gum sensitivity. What should I do?

Mild sensitivity of the teeth or gums is a common and temporary side effect of teeth whitening. If you experience this, here are a few steps to take:

  • Use Less Gel: The most common cause is overfilling the trays. You only need a very small drop of gel per tooth impression in the tray.
  • Wipe Away Excess: After placing the trays in your mouth, use a cotton swab or a soft cloth to wipe away any gel that has squeezed out onto your gums.
  • Take a Break: Skip a day or two between sessions to allow your teeth and gums to recover.
  • Reduce Wear Time: Try shortening your whitening sessions (e.g., from 30 minutes to 20 minutes).
If sensitivity is severe or persists, discontinue use and consult with your dentist.
